Job Description

Barrick Gold Corporation is seeking to employ a Senior Exploration Geologist with the Central Africa Copperbelt Exploration Department in the Africa and Middle East Division. This role is based at Lumwana Mine in Zambia but is also regional in nature with the incumbent also provided with opportunities to work in various countries, and on various projects, depending on business requirements.  Working in conjunction with the Central African Copperbelt Exploration Manager the role involves management and supervision of, and participation in, regional exploration activities in CACB and elsewhere as required, ensuring the work is compliant with international regulations for mineral resource reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute technical expertise to the exploration programme in specialised fields.
  • Participate in exploration program planning to ensure that programs are designed considering alternative options, costs, target rankings and are in line with Life-of-Mine strategy.
  • Preparation and presentation of technical reports.
  • Assist the Exploration Manager with coordination of specialist investigations and services of external consultants and contractors.
  • Be a key driver of reviewing Greenfields targets and rankings, design of suitable & phased evaluation programs and ensure high quality synthesis maps and presentation are established on all key projects with a focus of geological context in good time.
  • Participate in reducing overall exploration costs through effective management, option analysis, minimizing delay times, control of consumables etc.
  • Develop detailed documentation to justify proposed exploration programs in order to support Capital applications and budgets.
  • Ensure data capture is subjected to rigorous quality control and assurance.
  • Develop and take ownership of regional-, target-, and deposit-scale geological models as exploration progresses (lithology, structure, alteration, and mineralization).
  • Participate in mine site opportunities with justification presented to Exploration Manager for consideration.
  • Drilling programs progress as planned in a safe manner with holes drilled and logged at planned cost. Progress and results are communicated to management in timely fashion
  • Ensure lithological and structure wireframes and 3D models are updated continually with new data.
  • Sustain a high degree of interaction with other Division leaders.
  • Provide technical leadership to the exploration team including review, development and maintenance of best practice technical exploration systems and protocols.
  • In collaboration with the Exploration Manager ensure technical coaching for professional development purposes and the proactive mentorship of junior staff. Identify high performers and align for advancement
  • Be proactive in approaching and building teamwork with Department Team Members
  • Assist the Exploration Manager with all statutory and internal reporting requirements and all other stakeholders to be concise, effective & delivered on schedule
  • Ensure Exploration Department members and associated contractors have Zero LTIs. Increased focus on reporting and investigation of high potential incidents
  • Immediate stoppage of unsafe behaviors. Proactive in sending safety messages, safety alerts, interactions with teams and participating in safety meetings. FLRA conducted at all work places without fail
  • Ensure working in corruption free environment
  • Ensure Zero Reputational damaging incidents;

Requirements and Experience:

  • A minimum bachelor’s degree in Geology or Earth Science; a post-graduate degree in Mining or Exploration Geology would be an advantage.
  • Membership of SEG or equivalent professional organisation.
  • Solid knowledge of Sediment Hosted Copper models and a minimum 10 years’ direct experience in Sediment Hosted Copper exploration, preferably within the Central Africa Copperbelt.
  • Regional scale targeting and exploration experience.
  • Prior experience in managing exploration data and drilling programs.
  • An ability to think across-scales and to integrate large, diverse, datasets.
  • Experience in developing geological models at both deposit- and regional-belt scales.
  • An excellent understanding of geological settings, deposit models, and ore-forming processes as it pertains to the latest concepts of Sediment Hosted Copper geological environments.
  • A demonstrated commitment to safety, environment, and community.
  • Solid and demonstrated hands-on experience in field work, exploration data & drilling programs.
  • Shown to be self-motivated and possesses leadership abilities.
  • Previous work experience with Leapfrog, ArcGIS, MicroMine, and other related software platforms would be an advantage.
  • French language skills would be advantageous.
